Missing Autumn
Wednesday was hot, high 80's
Turkey Day was cold
Friday I put up 50 xmas lights around front door
Today it is near freezing, raining with possible snow in the hill country west of here.
We missed a season, no fall except for falling leaves. Now it is winter cold, wet, dark.

I've been able to paint, bundled up in cold studio, for the last three days. DS came over tonight and honestly told me my painting was boring and he is correct. Good to have a second set of eyes. I have tomorrow to push it forward. We'll see.

Cracking almonds and crackling fire tonight.

Put out cat carrier and sheet for outdoor cat ojn side porch.

Two outdoor potted plants ok for now, no freeze called for in the next couple days.
No swimming, school pool closed. Barton no sun, wind and air too cold. Monday will swim at sschool no matter the air temp.

Two last weeks of class left, then a lot more time.

First day of autumn working in my studio this morning. New painting on the easel. I guess its going ok. At least it is going along a vague idea of landscape and architecture that I've been working though in my sketch books.

Good four day studio weekend with a swim at barton later in the afternoon.

Hitchcock films on satellite this last week. Enjoyed watching Psycho last night.

Studio
Now that I have my studio back from the barking of the now gone neighbor dog, it's back to work there in the mornings and early afternoon.

On the advice of some faculty I purchased some Lukas Cryl which is, according to them, something like acrylic gouache. Tried it yesterday. Yuck. I can't go back to plastic land.

This morning worked on newish oil painting after drawing on the front deck. Getting somewhere. Looked at two books of Giotto images.

Paint faster and use a bigger brush
My advice to students sometimes. I got that same advice when I was in school. So today followed my own. Getting back into painting practice after Italian sojourn. Changed palette from earlier series. For now putting on paint, building up surface, looking and finding.

Three day studio morning and Barton Springs afternoon.

Barking neighbor dog muzzled after complaint about four hour barking into my side studio door kept open for ventilation.

Keeping new trees well watered now that the rainy summer seems over and it's back to normal summer highs in the 90s. Southern Oaks are leafing out very well.

Boutman found this. You can find my office here.

Still winter
Cold and overcast. But high 80s coming right back. Plants are confused about the record cold here over the weekend.

Working in studio, finally getting back to a painting started awhile ago. Without a digital camera now I can't show you the image.

Almost had new microwave installed, must wait another week when I can be home for the day. Home warranty is paying for it but it's no fun not having one for two months.

Easter brunch at Rachel and Chirs's house, then tried with Dan to deliver 7x7s to Okay Mountain. So everything else was closed, why would we think they'd be open.

It's been nice having these last days free of school work. Back to it tomorrow.

Just when you thought
Have been busy, what else, but have four free days over this easter weekend.

and what happens, it's almost freezing here today. Temp inching up from 35ºF this afternoon. Rain too. I thought the furnace was not going to fire up until next winter. I'd already had the AC kick in once or twice because of high temps and humidity lately.

Working in my chilly studio trying to finish a 5x7" painting for ArtHouse benefit.

Allergies hit me hard this past week. Haven't been swimming all week and now the rain and cold. Maybe tomorrow after a brunch and getting completed 7X7's to Okay Mountain.

Watched Castaway last night on satellite. Haven't rented a movie lately with daylight savings added hour for reading outside on front porch.

break time, drive time
I've been painting and driving and looking and relaxing.

Drove to Dallas with paintings on Thursday in a black new Grand Prix courtesy of the local car rental office that had to give me an upgrade since they didn't have the economy model I had reserved.

Two hundred miles plus later I got to Conduit soon after noon. Unloaded paintings, talked with Nancy and Danette and viewed the four shows there. Lance and I are up next. Sushi lunch courtesy of Nancy. Off to Gerald Peter's Galleries to view Bale Creek Allen's. Good stuff and good sales. Then off to the Fast Forward exhibit at the DMOA. Amazing contemporary collections coming that museum's way. I'll be back to Dallas in a dozen days for my opening there.

Then off to the hotel, it's pool and bar for the night.

Next day off early to Fort Worth and got there a bit before the 10AM entranced opening at the Frt. Worth Modern. Two great shows there. Pretty Baby which included a room sized installation by Margaret Meehan that looked great among the other rather creepy images of youngsters. Then there were the strange drawing in the Focus section of Ralf Ziervogel which carried the warning sign The works in this exhibition contain violent and sexually explicit imagery. Viewer discretion is advised.. One section of the Pretty baby show had the same warning. Kimball unfortunately didn't open on Fridays so missed my chance this trip to view some of my favorite early paintings.

Got back to Austin by 3 and very glad not to do any more driving.

Film's watched since, Friday was Sur mes lèvres (Read My Lips) which I highly recommend. Then last night watched a very cheesy horror film: The Nail Gun Massacre that was on the staff recommended shelf at Vulcan but doesn't get my recommendation.

Sunday now, tired of WFMU marathon, glad it is the last day. Need to get to paintings as I won't be able to get to my studio for a week after today. School stuff and then off to Kansas City and the SGC conference.

Thunderstorm rolling through
For SXSW and Austin spring breakers it's been a very wet couple of days. Glad I got some gardening in yesterday's quiet and enjoyable bday.

On [info]vickibarkley's recommendation I watched Sol del membrillo, El, Dream of Light, last night. As reported it was slow but nicely instructive of a painter's craft. Missed a bunch of the dialog. Lots of old vhs hiss and difficult to read subtitles. Image is the painter's marking of a leaf as the quince tree he was painting changed over time.
Working on my own canvas this morning. Slow changes. Depending on the weather I will either go swimming at school and get more dvds or spend the afternoon wrapping up paintings for shuttle to dallas. Just checked weather.com. Looks like severe t-storms, with warning until 7PM. Looks like I'll be staying in. Weather ahead looks dry for drive on Thursday.

***Tumblin’ Dice***

Women think I’m tasty, but they’re always tryin’ to waste me
And make me burn the candle right down,
But baby, baby, I don’t need no jewels in my crown.

’cause all you women is low down gamblers,
Cheatin’ like I don’t know how,
But baby, baby, there’s fever in the funk house now.
This low down bitchin’ got my poor feet a itchin’,
You know you know the duece is still wild.

Baby, I can’t stay, you got to roll me
And call me the tumblin’ dice.

Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry,
Don’t you see the time flashin’ by.
Honey, got no money,
I’m all sixes and sevens and nines.
Say now, baby, I’m the rank outsider,
You can be my partner in crime.

But baby, I can’t stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin’,
Roll me and call me the tumblin’ dice.

Oh, my, my, my, I’m the lone crap shooter,
Playin’ the field ev’ry night.

Baby, can’t stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin’ dice, (call me the tumblin’)
Got to roll me, got to roll me, got to roll me (oh yeah)
Got to roll me. got to roll me, got to roll me ( keep on rolling, keep on rolling)
