I haven't been to the pools in the last couple of days but one is going to be closed again even after the weather warms up. Barton was flooded by the 4+ inches of rain we had earlier and will need to be cleaned up again. Things are well covered with ice around my house and it is beginning to snow with white stuff accumulating on the ground. Hah! Dan S. just called and said he owed me a scotch as we had a bet, me saying it was going to snow and him being a disbeliever. I had fixed up a box with a warm towel for Blackie outside my kitchen and when I went to bed last night she was in there trying to hibernate. This morning her water bowl was frozen, now broken through, and the towel stiff and frozen too but now in the drier warming up. Studio warming, soon to paint. Questionable, will UT be open tomorrow? There is a study abroad fair I was to attend to at noon and the way things look, that is going to be a wash, or should I say a freeze. When I was young in junior and senior high, I could walk to the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado from our home in Pasadena and spend the night of new years eve camping out, reserving some front row seats on the curb for the Rose Parade the next morning. |
Now, much older and in Austin, I've taken a Polar Bear swim New Year's morning. I got a perfect parking place right next to the entrance, a good omen. Potluck foods and coffee inside the gate. At 11AM the air was a crisp 42ºF, a bright cloud less sky and a slight breeze. The water was it's usual warmer 68ºF. Swam the length four times for a good half mile. Out of the water and boy was the air cold. Towel and white polar bear sweatshirt cut the cold. Good community of people in a friendly mood. This picture is from last years event. Afterwards stopped for another coffee, my internal thermo said "cold", and spent time looking and reading at Border's Bookstore. Got home and took a hike through what is called Independence Park near me that is getting turned from a green belt with giant excavation into a housing project filled with what they call Bungalows . Our neighborhood association had fought off plans for large condo and rentals, but these will all be single family, at least to start. I'll bet they will be very close together with very little yards if it is anything like the other projects around this part of town. My leg is back to it's normal ugly self. Either it was the 2nd antibiotic I am still taking, the double doses off Aleve and the elevated leg, something worked. Inflammation and swelling is no longer. After a morning of aimless painting yesterday, got the front lawn mowed and edged, floors swept wet and dry moped and slides sent off to LA. My studio box fan fell and had a blade broken. So next headed to HEB for a replacement and Pet Smart for 10% off cat food. Threatening rain, but went to Barton Springs hoping for a cold swim to fight the 100º mugginess. People waiting outside the locked gate, I sat down with them to wait. After every sound of lightning the pool is closed for an half hour. After waiting 45 minutes the winds picked up and very dark clouds appeared and I headed home. Ken called from the road and headed over for a beer and a look into my studio. Today in the studio, it was attack mode. Aggressive mode. The painting is getting pushed either to a new level of craziness or over the edge. Something Ensor, DeKooning, Guston, Soutine has entered. That's an Ensor to the right, not mine. Back at it, then off to get more films, visit the AMOA and a swim at school. This is me
This is you
We're all here 'cause
We're not all there.
and so on and on
***Tumblin’ Dice***
Women think I’m tasty, but they’re always tryin’ to waste me And make me burn the candle right down, But baby, baby, I don’t need no jewels in my crown.
’cause all you women is low down gamblers, Cheatin’ like I don’t know how, But baby, baby, there’s fever in the funk house now. This low down bitchin’ got my poor feet a itchin’, You know you know the duece is still wild.
Baby, I can’t stay, you got to roll me And call me the tumblin’ dice.
Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry, Don’t you see the time flashin’ by. Honey, got no money, I’m all sixes and sevens and nines. Say now, baby, I’m the rank outsider, You can be my partner in crime.
But baby, I can’t stay, You got to roll me and call me the tumblin’, Roll me and call me the tumblin’ dice.
Oh, my, my, my, I’m the lone crap shooter, Playin’ the field ev’ry night.
Baby, can’t stay, You got to roll me and call me the tumblin’ dice, (call me the tumblin’) Got to roll me, got to roll me, got to roll me (oh yeah) Got to roll me. got to roll me, got to roll me ( keep on rolling, keep on rolling) |
